StarKist Co. announced plans today to expand its tuna processing facility in Atu'u, an investment that will create approximately 200 new jobs and represents the largest private sector investment in American Samoa in over a decade.
The $30 million expansion will add a new processing line and modernize existing equipment, increasing the plant's capacity by 25 percent.
"American Samoa has been home to our operations for over 50 years, and this investment reflects our commitment to the territory and its people," said the company's CEO in a statement.
The cannery is the largest private employer in American Samoa, and the expansion is expected to have significant ripple effects throughout the local economy.
