Dozens of community members gathered at the Veterans Memorial in Fagatogo yesterday to honor American Samoa's soldiers currently serving in the United States Armed Forces.
The ceremony, organized by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter, recognized the territory's long and proud tradition of military service.
"American Samoa has one of the highest rates of military enlistment per capita in the nation," noted the keynote speaker, a retired Army colonel. "Our sons and daughters serve with distinction in every branch of the military, carrying forward a legacy of honor and sacrifice."
Families of deployed service members were presented with certificates of appreciation, and a moment of silence was observed for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
